Dwayne Johnson’s Wrestling Movie With Marvel Star Gets New Adaptation

Stephen Merchant and Dwayne Johnson’s wrestling film starring a Marvel star is getting a new adaptation, and it’s not what most fans expected. The project is trading its camera angles for something audiences will have to show up in person to experience.

Fighting with My Family to get a stage musical adaptation

A stage adaptation of Stephen Merchant’s 2019 film, Fighting with My Family, is in development, according to Deadline. The production features collaboration between Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, Merchant, Kevin Misher, Tilted Musicals, and Birmingham Hippodrome. Jon Brittain will write the play and lyrics, with Miranda Cooper and Nick Coler composing the new soundtrack.

The feature film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and followed WWE performer Paige’s true-life journey. Florence Pugh portrayed the wrestling star, while Vince Vaughn played the WWE trainer. Johnson served as both an actor and producer alongside Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions on the original film.

The musical tells Paige’s story as she transitions from Norwich to America’s professional wrestling world. The character, originally named Saraya Knight, grew up in a chaotic but loving British wrestling family. Her pursuit of WWE stardom forces her to discover her identity away from her family’s support system.

Johnson expressed his enthusiasm about the stage adaptation in a statement. “Fighting with My Family feels exceptionally well-suited for the stage,” he said. “It’s packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling and connecting with a live audience.”

The actor emphasized the value of collaborating with Merchant on the original project. “Working with Stephen Merchant on the film was a truly special experience, and his brilliant work deserves this new act,” Dwayne Johnson continued. “As it comes to life musically, I have no doubt it will be an absolute blast for theatergoers.”

The stage production adapts the film’s narrative to theatrical format while maintaining its core themes of family, ambition, and personal transformation. Bringing the wrestling drama to live audiences represents a natural evolution for the acclaimed story.
