Will Smith’s Futuristic Sci-Fi Movie Gets Hulu Streaming Date

A 2004 sci-fi movie starring Will Smith will become available to stream on Hulu very soon. The Oscar-nominated movie centers on a detective investigating an alleged suicide, believing an AI robot killed the scientist who created them.

Will Smith’s I, Robot arrives on Hulu next month

Hulu will add I, Robot to its ever-expanding streaming library on Friday, May 1, 2026 (via Hulu).

The story takes place in 2035, where humanoid robots, designed by Dr. Alfred Lanning, are built to serve humankind. Following Lanning’s alleged suicide, detective Del Spooner investigates the scientist’s death. Having a natural hate for the AI, Spooner suspects that a robot named Sonny murdered its own creator.

Meanwhile, everyone opposes Spooner’s skepticism because the robots are built around the Three Laws of Robotics, which prevent them from harming humans. However, the detective learns that Lanning built Sonny with free will, prompting him to hunt the robot.

Alex Proyas helmed I, Robot with an original story by Jeff Vintar, who wrote the screenplay with Akiva Goldsman. Vintar’s original spec script was an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery titled Hardwired.

The cast features Will Smith as Spooner, Bridget Moynahan as Susan, Bruce Greenwood as Lawrence, James Cromwell as Dr. Alfred Lanning, Jerry Wasserman as Baldez, and Shia LaBeouf as Farber, among others. Meanwhile, Alan Tudyk voiced and performed motion capture for Sonny.

I, Robot debuted in theaters in the United States in July 2004 and received a mixed reception. While the critics gave it an approval rating of 57%, the audience gave it a higher rating of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the box office, the movie grossed $353 million worldwide against a reported budget of $120 million (via Box Office Mojo). Furthermore, it received an Oscar nomination for its visual effects, though it lost to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
