Anne Hathaway Gives The Princess Diaries 3 Update Amid Devil Wears Prada 2 Hype

As the release date for The Devil Wears Prada 2 approaches, Anne Hathaway has clarified the status of another highly anticipated sequel from her early career. While promotional efforts for the fashion-world follow-up are in full swing, the actress confirmed that development on The Princess Diaries 3 remains an active pursuit, albeit one that recently hit a logistical pause.

Anne Hathaway shares The Princess Diaries 3 update

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, conducted alongside co-star Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway addressed the future of The Princess Diaries 3. She confirmed that work on the project is ongoing. “One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it,” Hathaway stated.

However, the actress explained that the unexpected momentum behind The Devil Wears Prada 2 temporarily changed the priorities. As Hathaway shared, the sequel “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space.” She noted that while filming the project in the summer of 2025, “it became impossible to focus on both at the same time.”

With production on The Devil Wears Prada 2 now complete, Hathaway shared that The Princess Diaries 3 is most probably next in line creatively. “The intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” she said. However, the actress was careful to temper expectations regarding a formal production timeline, stressing that the third film “is not greenlit or confirmed yet.”

Despite the lack of a studio green light, the Oscar winner expressed confidence in the project’s demand and the ongoing script development. “Everybody wants it,” Hathaway said, adding that both she and her team are “chipping away at the script.”

Moreover, drawing a parallel to her experience returning to the role of Andy Sachs, The Intern star acknowledged the pressure associated with revisiting iconic characters. “If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park,” she told the publication. Streep, seated beside her, concurred, adding, “You’ve got to wait for the right script.”

For now, as audiences prepare for her return to the world of Runway magazine on May 1, Anne Hathaway hopes that Devil Wears Prada 2 resonates broadly.
