Avengers: Doomsday Trailer: Why RDJ’s Doctor Doom Could Be MCU’s Best Villain Yet

The Avengers: Doomsday CinemaCon trailer appears to reveal just how powerful Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is going to be.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the movie is scheduled to arrive in United States theaters later this year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is then slated to follow in 2027.

So far, Marvel has publicly released four Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailers. The first teaser revealed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is returning to the MCU, while the second focused on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the third on a handful of X-Men characters. The fourth and final teaser put the spotlight on Letitia Wright’s Black Panther/Shuri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm/The Thing, and more.

Just yesterday, a brand-new Avengers: Doomsday trailer was shown to those in attendance at Disney’s panel at CinemaCon. The trailer has not been publicly released online (and it’s currently unclear if it will be), though several descriptions of the footage that was shown have since emerged.

What does the Avengers: Doomsday trailer reveal about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom?

According to multiple outlets, the Avengers: Doomsday trailer features a moment where Thor, who is wielding his axe Stormbreaker, attempts to attack Doctor Doom; the attack is quickly thwarted, however, as Doom manages to stop Thor in his tracks with just the wave of two fingers.

Even in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Thor was able to land some hits against Thanos with Stormbreaker (technically, he killed Thanos with Stormbreaker, though the villain wasn’t exactly too concerned with defending himself in the moment). The Russos further teased Doctor Doom’s role in the movie as they said at CinemaCon, per The Hollywood Reporter, “He’s not simply a villain — he’s one of the most complex Marvel characters. He’s always three moves ahead.”

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is dated for December 17, 2027.
