Dwayne Johnson reveals new Moana live-action footage
At CinemaCon, The Smashing Machine star introduced an extended preview of the live-action Moana. The footage showed Catherine Laga’aia performing “How Far I’ll Go,” while Johnson’s Maui returns with “You’re Welcome.” The visuals included elements like glowing manta rays, a giant crab, and a fiery spirit, staying close to the animated film’s magical tone.
Johnson used the moment to explain what Maui represents to him. He said the demigod is deeply meaningful to Polynesian culture and has been part of his life for more than a decade. Drawing from personal roots, he revealed that Maui’s look and spirit were inspired by his grandfather, wrestler Peter “High Chief” Maivia. This connection shaped how he approached the role on screen (via Deadline).
He also spoke about the film’s central theme. According to Johnson, Maui reflects what “real masculinity” is, emphasizing that strength includes supporting and uplifting women. He also described Moana not as a traditional princess but as a warrior, adding that Maui’s role is to guide and empower her throughout the journey.
“The hero of our story is not a princess; she’s a warrior,” Johnson said. “All men of all ages, we should empower, support, and champion all women. That’s what real masculinity looks like” (via Variety).
The story itself remains familiar. Set in ancient Polynesia, it follows a young girl chosen by the ocean to save her people, with Maui helping along the way. The original film earned over $600 million globally and later grew even more popular on streaming. Its sequel crossed $1 billion, making the franchise one of Disney’s strongest modern hits.
