The Odyssey Runtime Gets Surprising Update for Christopher Nolan Movie
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey has got a noteworthy update, and it may come as a surprise to fans expecting another lengthy runtime. As the director teased the epicness of the upcoming movie at CinemaCon 2026, producer Emma Thomas talked about the possible runtime.
Producer Emma Thomas addresses the runtime of The Odyssey
Emma Thomas shared that the runtime of The Odyssey will come in under three hours (via Deadline). However, the actual running time isn’t set in stone as the film is still in post-production. The confirmation came during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, where Nolan revealed the first extended footage from his adaptation of Homer’s foundational text.
The runtime update is surprising to many, given Nolan’s track record. His films routinely push past the two-and-a-half-hour mark, and Oppenheimer became his longest theatrical release to date. For The Odyssey, an epic journey starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, a sub-three-hour commitment was unexpected, keeping in mind the scale audiences expect.
Christopher Nolan shared new footage that leaned heavily into The Odyssey’s scale and intensity. Scenes included the Trojan horse sequence, stormy sea journeys, and glimpses of creatures like the Cyclops (via The Hollywood Reporter). The sneak peek also stressed the emotional core of Odysseus’ journey, especially his longing to return to his family.
Additionally, Nolan described the production as “an absolute nightmare to film — but in all the right ways.” “partner on this journey” and shared he endured being “on the boats, up the mountains, in the caves, in the beating sunshine, sideways rain, wind” (via Variety).
The Odyssey’s cast also features Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. It will be released on July 17.
