Johnny Depp appeared at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to unveil the first footage from Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. Paramount presented the film as a bold new take on Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella. Ti West directs the film, which releases in theatres on November 13, 2026.
Depp said it was “an extraordinary privilege to step into a story I have been obsessed with since I was a little child.” He admitted feeling initially intimidated by Alastair Sim’s iconic 1951 portrayal of Scrooge. He added, “That’s no reason not to attempt something” (via Deadline).
The footage showcased Depp’s dramatic physical transformation into the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge. He appeared in heavy prosthetics with grimy mutton chops, greasy grey hair and yellowed teeth. The trailer blended spooky imagery with comic energy throughout Scrooge’s supernatural encounters.
Depp praised West’s vision for the project during his onstage remarks at the event. He said, “Ti did something really special, I was just sort of around for laughs.” West directed horror films including X, Pearl and The House of the Devil.
The footage featured Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, who warns Scrooge about three visiting spirits. Andrea Riseborough portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Severance star Tramell Tillman plays another spirit. The trailer ended with Rupert Grint’s Bob Cratchit attempting to wish Scrooge a Merry Christmas.
Ebenezer marks Depp’s first collaboration with a major American studio since his 2022 legal proceedings. The supporting cast includes Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber and Charlie Murphy. Nathaniel Halpern wrote the script, with Emma Watts producing alongside Domain Entertainment.
