1 Iconic Vincent D’Onofrio Performance Was Called ‘Horrible’ by Director

Vincent D’Onofrio has opened up about a filming experience wherein his acting was labeled “horrible.” D’Onofrio played a memorable role in the 1997 sci-fi film in question, but the director seemingly wasn’t pleased with the actor’s performance.

Here’s what D’Onofrio recalled about the incident.

In an interview with GQ, the Daredevil: Born Again actor detailed his experience of working on Men in Black. In one scene, D’Onofrio’s character, Edgar, a man taken over by an alien, was supposed to cross a barn, kill someone, and deliver a monologue.

However, director Barry Sonnenfeld cut the scene, which D’Onofrio initially believed was due to technical issues. Sonnenfeld then asked him to repeat the scene, but cut it at the same place he had before. He then asked D’Onofrio if he would act only in that way. The latter admitted that this was his only plan for the performance. He claimed he didn’t have a plan B and feared that he might get sacked.

He recalled, “I think it’s my last hurrah with Barry. And he said, ‘My God, this is horrible, it’s horrible.’ And I am about to say, ‘Okay, where do you want me to go?’ And he said, ‘It’s really just…’ and he just kept shaking his head, and he said, ‘But let’s continue and see what happens.’ He goes, and I’m like, ‘Okay.'”

Vincent D’Onofrio then revealed that, years later, they discussed the incident and looked back on it positively. He also commended Barry Sonnenfeld for trusting him with his bold take on the character.

Men in Black went on to become a massive success, with a strong box office performance and positive critical reception. It has spawned several sequels and reboots, a testament to the first film’s influence. D’Onofrio’s portrayal of an ill-tempered farmer who is killed and used as skin by a giant alien insect famously kicks off the iconic franchise.
