Gladys Release Date Set for Weapons Prequel Movie
Warner Bros. is already expanding the world of one of its most anticipated upcoming films with a prequel centered on a key character. The studio revealed the release window for the origin story during its CinemaCon showcase, giving fans a timeline for when they can expect to learn more about the villain who left a lasting impression.
Gladys to come out in September 2028
Warner Bros. has scheduled Gladys for a September 8, 2028, release, as announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, according to Variety.
The film is a prequel to Zach Cregger’s Weapons and will explore the origin story of the villain Aunt Gladys, originally played by Oscar-winning Amy Madigan. It remains to be seen whether Madigan will reprise her role in the prequel.
Cregger will write the script alongside Zach Shields, whose previous credits include Krampus and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The Gladys announcement came as part of a broader slate reveal by Warner Bros., which also confirmed release dates for The Revenge of La Llorona and Final Destination 7. The studio has steadily expanded its output under co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy since 2022.
De Luca noted that the overall box office remains down from pre-pandemic years because the number of major studio releases has declined by 23 percent. “You don’t need a crystal ball to wonder what admissions might look like that missing volume was made up for and restored,” he said. The studio released six films in 2022 and increased that number to 11 in 2025, with plans to release 14 films in 2026 and 18 in 2027.
Abdy acknowledged the inherent uncertainty in expanding the slate. “Look, we know they’re not all going to work,” she said from the CinemaCon stage. “There’s no version of this business that’s risk-free. But our job is to step up, make bets and own it when it doesn’t work.”
Warner Bros. is currently in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance. The merger could affect production timelines and shift release dates if it proceeds.
