Game of Thrones Prequel Movie Announced, Title Revealed

The sprawling universe of Westeros is officially heading to the big screen for the first time. Warner Bros. used its recent presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to confirm that the first-ever theatrical Game of Thrones prequel movie is not just a rumor; it has a working title and a legendary focus.

Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest prequel movie officially in works

The studio revealed the movie’s current working title as Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. While it is cautioned that the name could evolve in the months or years ahead, the announcement confirms that it is part of Warner Bros.’ ambitious “2027 and beyond” slate. This is a major expansion for the franchise, which has dominated television with the original series and subsequent prequels like House of the Dragon.

News of the Game of Thrones movie first broke last month, but the CinemaCon presentation provided the first concrete direction for the plot. The film will center on Aegon I Targaryen, the original conqueror from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire lore. Fans of the books will recognize this story from Martin’s Fire and Blood. It details the conquests and failures of the dragon-riding, throne-forging dynasty.

Aegon I was the visionary and ruthless character who united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler, melting the swords of his defeated enemies to create the Iron Throne. He ruled alongside his two sister-wives and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys, establishing a bloodline that would dominate the continent for generations.

Behind the camera, the project boasts quite a well-known creative pedigree. Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will be written by Beau Willimon. Willimon got critical acclaim as the showrunner of Netflix’s House of Cards. Additionally, more recently, as a writer on Disney+’s critically adored Star Wars series, Andor.

The big-screen announcement comes as the small-screen world of Westeros continues to thrive. HBO is currently gearing up for Season 3 of House of the Dragon. Additionally, they have also already ordered a Season 2 of the latest prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
