Project Hail Mary (Finally) Reaches Crucial Box Office Milestone

Amaze amaze amaze. Project Hail Mary has finally achieved an important box office goal for Amazon MGM Studios, which lays the groundwork for a potential sequel for the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi adventure. Right from the start when the movie was launched on March 20 in the United States, it broke box records records for the studio with its $80 million domestic haul, a notable achievement for any original production. So far in 2026, that number has only been surpassed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s domestic opener of $131 million. At the time, there were concerns that Project Hail Mary wouldn’t be a success given the film’s high production budget, but those worries can now be swept aside.

Project Hail Mary is officially a box office success

As of April 14, Project Hail Mary has earned $510 million worldwide at the box office, which exceeds the $500 million milestone it needed to achieve to break even. Thus far, its gross sales are split evenly between its domestic ($256 million) and international numbers ($254 million).

It should be noted that this $500 million goal for the movie is based on a report from Puck stating that its budget is $200 million. The initial production budget was notably higher at $248 million according to an internal document at Amazon (which would have made the break-even point around $620 million instead), but the studio was able to bring the cost down by taking advantage of tax credits from the UK. The general rule is that a movie, and particularly a blockbuster like this, needs to make 2.5 times its budget to become profitable after considering the cut theaters get from ticket sales and the cost for print and advertising.

Now the question is how profitable Project Hail Mary will be for Amazon MGM Studios. For context, the highest-grossing movie for the company had been Creed 3 with its $276 million total, which Project Hail Mary smashed within weeks of its debut. That said, the budget for Creed 3 was only $75 million, making its break-even point around $187 million and thereby netting the studio about $90 million in profit. Project Hail Mary will need to pass the $590 million mark to match that figure, which shouldn’t be too difficult for the movie to achieve.

Given the film’s popularity with family-friendly audiences and its high critic scores — it has very high 94% critic rating and 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes — Project Hail Mary should remain in theaters for at least another month. With the exception of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the film has not had much competition since launch. This will change later in April when the Lionsgate biopic Michael releases on April 24 and The Devil Wears Prada 2 comes out on May 1. Still, the sci-fi adventure should remain a spectacle on premium screens, like IMAX. It also helps that Rocky, the movie’s rock spider-crab alien creature, has hit it off as an adorable figure for statues, drawings, plushies, and memes.

With that in mind, this should provide enough time for Project Hail Mary to continue pushing its box office totals, especially when it comes to its international haul. The more profitable it is, the more likely Amazon MGM Studios will push for a sequel from author Andy Weir. While the movie doesn’t necessarily need a sequel, it will be hard for the studio to ignore its box office success. Weir has confirmed that he already has ideas on what a follow-up would look like for Project Hail Mary, though he is currently working on a different book that has nothing to do with the film.
