Rachel Zegler, Amanda Seyfried & More Cast in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s New Movie Musical

Rachel Zegler, Amanda Seyfried, and six others have been cast in a new movie musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Who is in the cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s next movie?

Zegler and Seyfried headline the cast of Octet, an a cappella musical that premiered Off-Broadway in 2019. In Octet, a group of eight internet addicts gathers for a support group in a church basement.

The cast includes Zegler as Velma, Seyfried as Jessica, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Paula, Phillipa Soo as Karly, Gaten Matarazzo as Toby, Jonathan Groff as Henry, Tramell Tillman as Marvin, and Paul-Jordan Jansen as Ed.

Miranda revealed the cast in an Instagram post and noted that rehearsals have begun.

Earlier this month, Miranda was announced as the director of Octet. “I’ve been obsessed since I saw Annie Tippe’s production in November 2019, and working on adapting this with Dave for the past six years,” Miranda said in the initial announcement. “Now we get to make the movie.”

Octet is Miranda’s second directorial feature following 2021’s tick, tick…BOOM!, a semi-autobiographical story about Jonathan Larson’s journey in the theater industry and his attempt to write the titular musical. The movie was nominated for two Oscars: Best Actor for Andrew Garfield and Best Film Editing.

Miranda will direct Octet from a screenplay by playwright and composer Dave Malloy, the playwright and composer of the original 2019 musical. Julie Oh, John Skidmore, and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. will produce. Executive producers include Malloy, Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, Diana DiMenna, Sander Jacobs, Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore.

Many of the cast members have experience on Broadway and in movie musicals. Zegler recently won an Olivier for her role in the West End production of Evita. Last year, Seyfried starred in Mona Fastvold’s musical drama The Testament of Ann Lee. Grof and Soo starred alongside Miranda in Hamilton.

Ralph received a Tony nomination for her role in 1982’s Dreamgirls. Matarazzo has appeared in productions of Les Misérables and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Tillman has starred in multiple Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, while Jansen was an understudy in Sweeney Todd.
