Nicole Kidman, widely considered one of the finest actresses of her generation, continues to be active in the film industry, but it seems that she is also moving towards another offbeat career path.
Kidman revealed during a talk at the University of San Francisco on Saturday that she is training to be a death doula.
A death doula is a non-medical professional who provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and families navigating terminal illness and death. As per the International End of Life Doula Association, caregivers can help with psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and practical support.
The actress revealed that she decided on this after her mother’s death in 2024. “As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” Kidman said to the crowd at the University of San Francisco, “Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’ (via San Francisco Chronicle).”
“So that’s part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning,” the actress added. Though the role may sound offbeat, Kidman is not the first one from Hollywood going down this path. Hamnet and Nomadland director Chloe Zhao is also a trained death doula.
