The Legend of Zelda Movie Is Now 1 Step Closer To Release

The long-awaited The Legend of Zelda movie has taken a big step forward, with production moving into a new phase. Backed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the project is finally gaining real momentum.

Sony gives amazing filming update on The Legend of Zelda at CinemaCon

A major update came during CinemaCon, where Sony confirmed that filming for The Legend of Zelda has officially wrapped. While no footage or images were shown, this milestone signals that the movie has moved past production and is now heading into post-production work. The film is currently set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027 (via IGN).

Casting details have also been confirmed earlier. Bo Bragason will play Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth takes on the role of Link. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto shared the news himself, saying he is “very much looking forward” to seeing both actors bring these iconic characters to life on the big screen.

Behind the scenes, the film has a strong creative team. Wes Ball is directing, with Derek Connolly writing the script. Miyamoto is producing alongside Avi Arad, a former Marvel Studios executive. The project was first announced in 2023 and is being co-financed by Nintendo and Sony.

Talking about the project, Ball shared in an interview, “I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie.“ He continued, ”A real movie that can give people an escape… [It has] to feel like something real. Something serious and cool but fun and whimsical.”

The Legend of Zelda franchise itself is one of gaming’s biggest names. Since its debut in 1986, it has delivered dozens of titles, each building on its backbone of exploration, puzzles, and storytelling. Fans love its rich world, memorable characters, and sense of adventure. That is why a movie adaptation has been requested for years.

If done right, the film could work well by focusing on a grounded and realistic tone, something Ball has hinted at before. With filming complete and a clear release date locked in, the journey to Hyrule on the big screen is now closer than ever.
