Taika Waititi‘s Sci-Fi Movie With Jenna Ortega Gets Release Date & Trailer
Sony Pictures brought some long-awaited news to CinemaCon, finally revealing when audiences can see Taika Waititi‘s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian book. The studio confirmed the release date is October 23, 2026, and showed the first trailer to convention attendees.
Klara and the Sun’s release date and trailer revealed at CinemaCon
TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown introduced the trailer by framing Klara and the Sun‘s emotional core. “This is a hopeful story about friendship and connection at a time when technology makes us feel so alone,” Brown told the CinemaCon audience (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, a solar-powered robot designed to provide companionship and support to the humans she serves. The trailer, set to the familiar tune of “I Got You Babe,” offers a first glimpse at Ortega’s take on the earnest artificial friend (via Jeff Sneider).
“How will I know if my person and I are a good match?” Ortega’s Klara asks in the first look footage. The preview introduces Mia Tharia as Josie, an ailing girl who selects Klara to come live with her family. Amy Adams plays Josie’s skeptical mother, who questions the choice upon seeing the robot for the first time. “This one? She looks tired,” Adams’ character remarks. The supporting cast includes Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne.
Taika Waititi directs the film, adapting Ishiguro’s acclaimed 2021 book. The production team includes veteran producers David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Garrett Basch alongside Waititi.
Now, the Klara and the Sun release date announcement ends a lengthy period of uncertainty for the project. Industry observers previously speculated the film might surface in 2024 or 2025, but those windows passed without confirmation.
Before Klara and the Sun, fans might be able to see Jenna Ortega on the big screen in The Gallerist.
