Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Gets Good News in Latest Box Office Projection

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has wrapped up an encouragingly solid box office projection as we head toward its theatrical release on Friday, April 17, in the US. As the director and writer for this new film in The Mummy franchise, Cronin is best known for his work on Evil Dead Rise, which overperformed at the box office given its shoestring budget. This upcoming movie is a supernatural horror reimagining of the popular, swashbuckling Brandon Fraser-led flick from the late ’90s and the critically panned Tom Cruise reboot in 2017. Produced by Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy hopes to be a box office hit for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

How much is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy expected to make over its domestic weekend?

The latest box office prediction for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has the film earning somewhere in the range of $15 million to $20 million in its domestic weekend.

This figure comes from a mid-April report from BoxOffice Pro, which initially believed that the film would bring in $10 million to $20 million back in late March. This $5 million increase in its lower bound might not sound like a lot, compared to the huge opening numbers for other blockbusters like Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but this is a vast improvement for a lower-budget horror film.

These numbers match the movie’s box office projection from analytics site BoxOfficeTheory, which believes that it will earn $15 million in its domestic opener (in a range between $14 million and $20 million) from an April 10 report. It believes that Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will rake in $36 million (between $33 million and $59 million) for its full domestic run. By comparison, Evil Dead Rise made $24 million in its domestic opener and earned a total of $147 million worldwide, though it should be noted that the Evil Dead franchise has more recognition than The Mummy franchise does at the moment.

It’s still unclear whether Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will be a box office success mainly because we don’t know the budget of the production yet. Evil Dead Rising had a budget somewhere between $15 million and $19 million, so it would not be too surprising if this follow-up for Cronin is in the same ballpark.

Early reactions to Lee Cronin’s The Mummy are positive so far

Thus far, this horror entry in the franchise has performed well on social media and trailer views. Its first official trailer in February has earned an impressive total of 19 million views to date. Multiple trailers for the film notably feature the words “From The Studios That Brought You Weapons,” which should help clarify to audiences that this isn’t an action blockbuster, especially since Brendan Fraser (alongside Rachel Weisz and John Hannah) will be returning for The Mummy 4. Adding “Lee Cronin” to the title will help too, though many casual viewers outside of the horror genre likely won’t know who that is.

In other good news, horror films have tended to overperform at the box office in recent years, especially those that receive strong word-of-mouth from fans and critics. On that front, early reactions to Lee Cronin’s The Mummy have been positive, with reviewers calling it graphic, unsettling, and gruesome. We won’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score for the movie until we get closer to its theatrical release, but things are looking positive.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy follows married couple Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor) and Larissa Cannon (Larissa Cannon) who learn that their daughter Katie (Natalie Grace) has been found mummified in a sarcophagus eight years after she went missing in the desert. However, she comes back as a gray, frail version of herself that the Cannon family don’t recognize. And horror ensues.
