The Mandalorian & Grogu Finds the Way With High Box Office Prediction

The upcoming Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu has received a solid early box office prediction about a month before its May release. Instead of creating the fourth season of the popular The Mandalorian show on Hulu, Lucasfilm decided to condense it into a movie that will bring the Star Wars franchise back to the silver screen after a six-year hiatus. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin or Mando alongside the still silent Grogu, aka “Baby Yoda,” in a new adventure that sees the pair fighting the good fight for the New Republic and joining forces with other characters from the franchise. Jon Favreau, the creator of the critically-acclaimed streaming series, is the director for the project as well as one of its writers. The Mandalorian & Grogu is slated to arrive on May 22, 2026 in the US.

Early box office projection for The Mandalorian movie starts strong

As of April 10, The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to earn around $71 million in its domestic opening weekend as it hopes to become one of the top blockbusters heading into the summer.

This projection comes from the analytics site BoxOfficeTheory, which highlights The Mandalorian series as one of just a handful of highs for the Star Wars franchise. To put this $71 million prediction in context to other films that have come out in 2026, it’s lower than the $80 million Project Hail Mary received during its domestic opener in late March but higher than the $63 million Scream 7 made in late February. However, compared to the domestic openers for other Star Wars films, it’s well below the $177 million for 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and the $155 million for 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

On the bright side, the film leans into one of the roles that made Pedro Pascal a household name as well as the popularity of Grogu, who is still a pop culture icon that is sure to sell plenty of merchandise during its theatrical run. According to Luminate Data, the third season of The Mandalorian had around 5.4 million to 5.7 million viewers, suggesting a strong, dedicated fanbase. The report believes that this cinematic outing will be able to appeal to both diehard fans of the show as well as casual Star Wars viewers, particularly families, in a similar way as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It also has the benefit of releasing during the Memorial Day weekend, which is typically when students begin summer vacation.

That said, it’s been roughly three years since The Mandalorian Season 3 and the cultural relevance of the show peaked near the end of its second season in late 2020. Like similar efforts from the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Hulu, the popularity of the series on streaming may not translate easily to a film. While Lucasfilm is marketing The Mandalorian & Grogu as a standalone production, some viewers will feel like they need to watch all three seasons of the show to understand what’s going on in the movie. Though a February trailer reveals a fight between Din Djarin and Jeremy Allen White’s Rotta the Hutt, the son of the famous Jabba the Hutt, it could be seen as an largely optional offshoot from the main Star Wars movies.

In addition, The Mandalorian & Grogu is coming out during a crowded summer theatrical calendar with many films that are aiming for the movie’s male-centric and family-friendly audience. This includes the live-action Masters of the Universe, Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, all of which are coming out in June and could slow the film’s momentum.

Some of the marketing for The Mandalorian movie has been negatively received too, particularly its Super Bowl ad that sounds more like a car commercial than a cinematic sci-fi trailer. Also, the film unfortunately didn’t break the Top 10 in a April 8 survey Fandango conducted on what moviegoers most wanted to watch this summer, showing that the film could be lacking awareness and audience anticipation.
