Jon Hamm on Why His Superman & Mr. Sinister Roles Never Happened

Jon Hamm recently sat down for an interview where he disclosed why his Superman and Mr. Sinister roles never saw the light of day. The Golden Globe awardee was eyed to take the mantle of the Man of Steel in Superman Returns. The actor even auditioned for the role, which ultimately went to Brandon Routh.

Jon Hamm reveals what happened with his Superman audition and Mr. Sinister

The Mad Men star was the latest guest on Josh Horowitz’s podcast. There, he talked about his Superman and Mr. Sinister roles.

On Happy, Sad, Confused, Horowitz brought up the topic of Jon Hamm auditioning for the role of Superman in the 2006 movie, Superman Returns. In his reply, the latter stated that he had auditioned for the role but said he was “too old.”

Hamm also made a reference to James Gunn’s Superman, played by David Corenswet in the new DCU. He added, “My pitch for the Superman thing was like, ‘What if Superman was funny like he used to be with Christopher Reeve?’ And they were like, ‘Great idea. We’re going to do that two more Supermans later.” Thus, Hamm didn’t go on to become the Kryptonian superhero, and instead, Brandon Routh was cast.

Additionally, the Your Friends & Neighbors actor discussed the Mr. Sinister role he was close to playing in the 2020 movie, The New Mutants. He conveyed, “That was a that was supposed to happen and didn’t. I think there was some corporate craziness that went, and they sold the studio, and Disney bought the studio.”

Previously, in another interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June last year, Jon Hamm even asserted that he preferred antagonist roles over someone like Superman. He stated, “My history of characters isn’t exactly the saints; it’s more on the sinner side of the equation. But Superman can be kind of boring. No offense to the new Superman [David Corenswet], who I hope is a delightful person.”
