Power Rangers Star Reveals New Reboot Killed Plans for 3 Sequels
Dacre Montgomery has confirmed that 2017’s Power Rangers was set to have a total of three sequels before plans for a reboot put a premature end to the film series. In a recent interview, the Australian actor explained why his movie failed to spawn a franchise before sharing his thoughts on the future of the fan-favorite superhero IP.

The Stranger Things star disclosed that the Dean Israelite-helmed project’s box-office failure, combined with an ownership change for the entity, unfortunately ensured that the movie wouldn’t have any follow-up installments.
“It was a four-picture deal with Lionsgate,” Dacre Montgomery noted to MovieWeb. He also stated that the studio had originally envisioned a Hunger Games-style franchise for the Power Rangers movie before ultimately scrapping the idea in favor of a reboot.
“It was gonna be a whole big thing,” the 31-year-old added. “But what can you do, right? We’re talking about money and big business, and it didn’t make enough on the investment that the studio had made to continue making more. But I hear they’re rebooting it again. I think Saban might have sold the IP off, so I’m excited for the future of that. Power Rangers means a great deal to a lot of people. So I know that whoever steps into those shoes will be great. And I had the best time.”
Notably, 2017’s Power Rangers featured a star-studded cast including Naomi Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader, and Montgomery. It had an extremely mediocre performance at the box office during its theatrical run. According to MovieWeb, the film could only muster $142 million globally on an estimated budget of $120 million.
Additionally, Saban Entertainment sold the rights to the Power Rangers IP to Hasbro in 2018, triggering a complete reboot of the franchise. At the time of writing, Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg are working on a new Power Rangers series for Disney+. However, the project has yet to receive any further updates from its creators regarding its cast or release date schedule.
