Man of Tomorrow’s James Gunn Quickly Discredits DCU Maxima Casting Update

James Gunn has very quickly shot down a recent Man of Tomorrow casting update.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in United States theaters in 2027. Written and directed by James Gunn, the DCU movie serves as a follow-up to 2025’s Superman. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will both reprise their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor.

What did James Gunn say about Man of Tomorrow?

Earlier today, Deadline reported that DC was considering Marisa Abela, Adria Arjona, and Ella Purnell for the role of Maxima. The outlet reported that all three stars had begun screen testing for the role last week.

Gunn, however, quickly went to Threads and said that Deadline’s story was inaccurate less than an hour after it was published.

Gunn wrote, “Deadline’s reporting is shoddy & incorrect. I’ve always thought Deadline was pretty thorough in their journalism but that’s not the case here so I’m frankly disappointed. If someone would have run these names by us we would have said it’s bullshit. I’ve been friends with Adria a long time since I cast her in the Belko Experiment. I’m a fan of both Marisa and Ella but I’ve never met either of them. Crazy.”

In the comments, James Gunn was asked if this meant he was confirming that Maxima is in the movie.

“I am absolutely not confirming that (and didn’t),” Gunn said.

Plot details for Man of Tomorrow remain under wraps at this time, though it is known that the movie will see Superman and Lex Luthor have to work together to defeat a greater threat, which will presumably be Brainiac. Brainic is being played by Lars Eidinger in the film.

Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027. Superman, meanwhile, is available to stream on HBO Max.
