Steven Soderbergh’s Controversial Choice on Upcoming Movies Is Sure to Divide Fans

Steven Soderbergh recently revealed a few pieces of news about his upcoming movies, and it’s sure to divide fans who are longtime fans of the legendary filmmaker.

What is Steven Soderbergh’s choice and why is it so polarizing?

In a recent interview with Filmmaker Magazine, Soderbergh shocked fans when he mentioned that he’s not only been working with AI lately, but that one of his upcoming movies is set to feature “a lot” of the controversial technology in order to achieve a specific image.

Soderbergh mentioned that he’s been working with AI lately on a documentary about the late John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono. According to Soderbergh, “AI has been helpful in creating thematically surreal images that occupy a dream space rather than a literal space,” and that, like any other technology, still requires “very close human supervision.”

Soderbergh went on to note that he is trying to get a movie made about the Spanish-American War, and it will utilize “a lot of AI” due to the money involved. “I’ve just got to get it cast. I’ve got Wagner Moura. I need a few more people. I have two studios circling, but it’s all about how much I can do it for. But if I can get the right cast together, that will eventize it, and people will feel they have to see it now rather than waiting two months until it streams. It’s a weird time to be making movies,” said the director.

Very quickly, Soderbergh’s comments were criticized by fans of both his and the world of movies as a whole. The use of AI is still a highly controversial one, not only due to some of its resource-intensive nature, but the fact that many AI creations still have a certain look that feels very “fake” to many.

While the use of AI is not new by any means, many are lamenting the fact that one of the best working directors in Hollywood seems to be ready to use it heavily. While Soderbergh’s reasons are more pragmatic and financially driven than artistically motivated, many believe that someone of his caliber beginning to use AI will just be the start of a very slippery slope.
