X-Men Director Explains How MCU’s Reboot Will Differ From Fox Marvel Movies
Jake Schreier, set to helm the X-Men film reboot taking place in the MCU, recently revealed how it will differ from the 20th Century Fox movies. In an interview, he highlighted the importance of taking the iconic mutant superhero team through unexplored story avenues. Schreier previously helmed Thunderbolts,* which premiered in May 2025.
Jake Schreier wants MCU’s X-Men reboot to ‘feel new’
Jake Schreier expressed his desire to do something never done before with the MCU X-Men reboot in a recent interview.
The director recently spoke with Screenrant to promote Beef Season 2. During the discussion, the outlet asked him how he and the creative team approached the upcoming Marvel movie’s casting process and exercised their vision. While the director declined to comment on that, he admitted that the work was both “a huge responsibility and an incredible opportunity.”
The Paper Towns director then shared that he and Marvel Studios were having discussions about making the film “feel new” to fans. He also said that they were talking about storytelling possibilities that “[felt] like [they were] succeeding” the 20th Century Fox movies.
“Obviously, this series has done such incredible things and succeeded in so many ways, and done so many beautiful things,” he added. “Like, what are some places we can go, and some areas of the lore that we can explore where it feels like we’re taking people to a new place.”
Schreier started work on the film, which Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are writing, in August 2025. Speaking to Empire Magazine, he described the process as “very, very exciting.” The director also said that he would incorporate the lessons he learned while making Thunderbolts* into the X-Men movie. “The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes,” he explained. “And how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff.”
He continued, “By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better’ … These are very special experiences.”
