Francis Ford Coppola’s New Movie Finally Gets an Update on His Birthday
Francis Ford Coppola’s new movie received an update on his 87th birthday. The veteran filmmaker first confirmed he had been developing it in a 2024 interview, where he also briefly described its tonal structure. His last film, Megalopolis, hit theaters that year, becoming a commercial failure and garnering mixed reviews.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Glimpses of the Moon expected to be shot in southern Italy
President Vito Bardi of Basilicata announced on Francis Ford Coppola‘s birthday that he is making his new movie, Glimpses of the Moon, in the Southern Italy region. He labeled it “an ambitious project” that would make Basilicata and its neighbor, Calabria, a big international film set (via Sky). The Italian general and politician added that the regions will be instrumental in recreating “European atmospheres and refined settings” to fit with the main characters’ stories.
This is an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s 1922 novel of the same name, which explores multiple concepts like marriage in the United States.
Coppola first announced that he was working on the film in an interview with The Telegraph in September 2024. He also told the outlet that it would have “strong dance and musical elements.” He added, “I’ve turned it into a very odd confection.” Moreover, he also shared that he planned to shoot it in the UK and Europe and fund the film with national subsidies after using $120 million of his funds from his winemaking business to make Megalopolis.
Three months later, the Apocalypse Now filmmaker told The Washington Post that he was moving to London to make Glimpses of the Moon, describing it as a “30s-style strange musical.” Months later, Coppola told Deadline the movie would be “modestly budgeted.”
Later, a casting call from Calabria Film Commission revealed that production would commence in December 2025. However, that didn’t come to fruition. The call also revealed that the feature’s production would take place in Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, and Scilla.
Glimpses of the Moon’s last adaptation was a 1923 silent movie that Allan Dwan directed. Famous Players-Lasky produced it while Paramount Pictures served as the distributor. Featuring Bebe Daniels in the lead role, it is now a lost film.
