Michael Jackson Biopic’s Huge Reshoots Cost & Ending Changes Revealed
Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic has had a turbulent road to theaters, and a last-minute legal discovery sent filmmakers scrambling to rebuild the film from the ground up. The reshoot bill has now come to light, and it is anything but small. Here is everything known about the changes, the cuts, and the reasons behind them.
How much Michael reshoots cost reportedly revealed
According to Variety, the Michael Jackson biopic’s complete third act overhaul added $10 million to $15 million to its production costs.
In June 2025, the cast spent 22 days shooting a new ending in Los Angeles, which did not qualify for state tax rebates. The Jackson estate covered the extra costs, as its own oversight necessitated the changes, and received an equity stake in the film in return.
The reshoots pushed the film’s release from April 18, 2025, to April 24, 2026. The Palisades fire damaged screenwriter John Logan’s house, further delaying the process. Lionsgate greenlit the film at a budget of $155 million, with reshoot costs added entirely on top.
Where Michael ends and what got removed
The film originally opened with Jackson staring at his reflection as police lights flashed behind him during the 1993 Neverland Ranch search by investigators.
The original third act depicted the fallout from child molestation accusations against the singer. Jackson estate lawyers then discovered a settlement clause with accuser Jordan Chandler that barred his depiction or mention in any film, forcing filmmakers to remove all related scenes and any reference to the allegations.
The new ending places Jackson on his “Bad” tour, showing him preparing to take the stage at the height of his career. His relationship with domineering father Joe Jackson, played by Colman Domingo, now drives the film’s dramatic tension. Real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson portrays the pop star, and the film also covers severe scalp burns he sustained during a 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot and the painkiller abuse that followed.
Michael hits theaters on April 24, 2026.
