Marvel fans are once again in detective mode after a recent social media post by Simu Liu led to casting speculation about Avengers: Doomsday. The actor’s Instagram story, which appeared to decode hidden details from Robert Downey Jr.’s Easter-themed artwork, has led many to believe that two major characters may have been unintentionally confirmed for the upcoming film.

The chain of events began when Robert Downey Jr., who is going to play Victor Von Doom in the upcoming film, shared a piece of themed artwork to celebrate Easter weekend. The photo featured decorated eggs adorned with logos representing various Marvel factions and heroes, including the New Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Namor, and Shang-Chi.
However, two additional symbols stood out to fans—those linked to Doctor Strange and Spider-Man. Both characters have long been rumored to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but their roles have not been officially confirmed.
Simu Liu later reposted the same photo to his personal Instagram story. However, Liu took the analysis a step further by overlaying the photo with character headshots of the actors associated with each logo. While he may have been simply engaging with a fan-made decoding guide, his large platform amplified the message.
One fan stated on X, “At this point can I call this confirmed lol look at Simu Liu’s Instagram story.”
Another post read, “Shang Chi actor Simu Liu has shared the meaning behind each egg from RDJ’s Instagram post. Doctor Strange and Tom Holland Spider man confirmation?”
It is entirely possible that Simu Liu was merely having fun with the Avengers: Doomsday Easter egg hunt and that fans are reading too much into a holiday post. However, the timing aligns with ongoing production schedules. The trades have noted that reshoots are a standard part of Marvel’s process, leaving the door open for additional cast members to film scenes closer to the release date, even if they were not part of the principal photography announcement.
Avengers: Doomsday features a massive ensemble cast including Benedict Cumberbatch and is going to be released on December 18.
