The Batman 2 Director Matt Reeves Lines Up Surprising Next Project

Fans hoping for The Batman 3 received a disappointing update after learning of Matt Reeves‘ future directorial plans.

According to Variety, Reeves is attached to direct and executive produce The Bonfire of the Vanities, a TV show for Apple TV. David E. Kelly will write the show, which is based on Tom Wolfe’s popular novel.

Warner Bros. Television is the studio for the show. Additional executive producers include Sarah Geismer and Matthew Tinker.

Starting in 1984, The Bonfire of the Vanities originally appeared as a serial in Rolling Stone. In 1987, Wolfe transformed the serial into a novel. In 1990, Brian De Palma directed The Bonfire of the Vanities movie starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and Morgan Freeman.

“Wall Street executive Sherman McCoy (Tom Hanks) is riding with his greedy girlfriend, Maria (Melanie Griffith), when she makes a wrong turn and winds up in the Bronx,” the official synopsis reads. “There, she runs over a black boy and drives off without reporting it. When alcoholic tabloid reporter Peter Fallow (Bruce Willis) discovers the story, he knows it will be scandalous and riles up New Yorkers with his coverage of the case, which soon goes to trial.”

What is the latest status for The Batman 3?

Reeves is currently in pre-production on The Batman: Part II, which begins filming in London this spring. The Batman: Part II stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and hits theaters on October 1, 2027, five years after 2022’s The Batman.

Reeves’ Batman saga is widely expected to be a trilogy. However, the news of Reeves directing this Apple show means he won’t be filming The Batman 3 after the second movie. While it’s unclear if fans will have to wait another five years between Batman movies, Reeves clearly has plans to work on something else before wrapping up his time in Gotham City.

There have been rumors that James Gunn has been pushing for The Batman 3 to be released sooner rather than later. Gunn allegedly did not want two Batmans at the same time (one in Reeves’ crime saga and one in the DCU‘s The Brave and the Bold); However, Gunn has debunked that rumor.

“That’s incorrect,” Gunn said when asked about The Batman 3 rumor on Threads. “Well, I mean I don’t know if it’s incorrect that DPK was told that, but the information is incorrect.”
