‘Godspeed, Artemis’: Apollo 13 Actor Tom Hanks Celebrates Lunar Mission
Tom Hanks reacted right after Artemis II launched into space. The actor, long linked with Apollo 13, shared his support for the astronauts heading toward the Moon.
Tom Hanks shares post about Artemis II launch
Tom Hanks marked the Artemis II launch with an Instagram post. The mission itself already stands out in a major way as NASA’s first crewed journey beyond low Earth orbit in more than 50 years.
After the launch, in his post, the veteran actor pointed out how long it has been since humans went that far into space. He then named the astronauts, one by one, writing, “Did you know that no humans have traveled beyond the gravitational pull of the Earth since December 1972? That changes today, when the crew of Artemis lifts off from the Cape… Reid Wiseman. Victor Glover. Jeremy Hansen. Christina Koch. On a voyage around the Moon. Godspeed, Artemis… And thank you… THanks”
The Artemis II mission is expected to last around 10 days. The American astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen will travel around the Moon and then return.
This will be the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft. The spacecraft is named Orion CM-003 Integrity because it “embodies the foundation of trust, respect, candor, and humility across the crew.” It is also the first time humans will go beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972.
Hanks has stayed connected to space stories for years now, and it shows. He recently worked on projects about NASA’s lunar missions, co-wrote and narrated The Moonwalkers, and also spoke with the Artemis II crew.
With Artemis II, NASA moves one step closer toward future Moon missions. The launch marks progress, and it signals what comes next.
