Henry Cavill ‘Would Love’ To Be in James Bond Reboot but Not as 007

Henry Cavill has addressed one of Hollywood’s most persistent casting conversations ahead of the James Bond franchise’s highly anticipated reboot. The actor and the iconic spy role have long been linked, but Cavill has now clarified exactly where he stands and what part he would actually want to play.

Henry Cavill admits he’s too old for James Bond, wants to be villain instead

Henry Cavill has ruled himself out of playing James Bond, citing his age as the primary obstacle. The 42-year-old actor told Heat Magazine: “I didn’t turn the role down – it just wasn’t the right time.” He added, “What actor wouldn’t love to be Bond? But at 42, I’d probably be considered a bit old to start now.”

Despite stepping back from the lead role, Cavill expressed enthusiasm for a different position in the franchise. “I would love to be a Bond villain, though. If it was the right character, I think that would be fascinating to explore.” His comments arrive as the Bond franchise undergoes a significant creative reset behind the scenes.

Amazon MGM confirmed Denis Villeneuve as director of the next 007 film in June 2025. Steven Knight subsequently joined the project as screenwriter. No actor has been officially cast as Bond yet, leaving the franchise’s future lead role still open.

Cavill previously starred as Napoleon Solo in Guy Ritchie’s 2015 spy thriller, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He also played villain August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, demonstrating his ability to portray threatening characters convincingly. Both films established his credentials within the spy genre specifically.

Off-screen, Cavill has a one-year-old daughter with girlfriend Natalie Viscuso. He described how fatherhood shifted his perspective: “Your priorities change. What you used to prioritise before no longer seems quite as important.” He also noted that children who recognise him on the street “don’t see you as the actor who plays the superhero, they see you as actual Superman.”
