Cameron Diaz has confirmed her involvement in Shrek 5, officially returning to voice Fiona as the franchise prepares its next installment. She shared the update during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in which she also spoke about her experiences with fans.
During the conversation, Fallon asked if she would be returning to voice Fiona, to which Diaz responded, “I am, yeah.” She followed this by saying, “We’re doing the fifth Shrek. Can you believe it? It’s like two decades,” prompting a strong reaction from the audience.
The conversation then shifted to Fiona’s evolution in the series. After an audience member called out, “You’re Queen Fiona,” Diaz responded, “Oh! -That’s right. I forgot about that. I’m no longer Princess Fiona.” This prompted Diaz to joke with Fallon by saying to him, “You will address me as such,” with Fallon apologizing promptly and joking about being “scolded.”
Diaz also shared an anecdote about how children respond when they find out she voices the character. When asked if fans recognize her voice, she explained that it is often parents who point it out, saying, “Honey, this is Princess Fiona. She does the voice for Princess Fiona.”
She then recalled, “One time, this little girl, she just looked at me and burst into tears. She just started crying so — like, bawling her eyes out, and her mom’s like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I’m like, ‘I really don’t take it personally.’” Diaz added, “They don’t quite understand. So I always tell parents like, don’t tell them.”
The upcoming film will also see the return of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey.
