Sam Worthington Lists 1 Major Difference Between Avatar & Marvel Films

James Cameron’s Avatar series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may have spawned the most successful movies in cinema history, but, according to Sam Worthington, the two franchises differ in one key aspect. In a recent interview, the Australian actor opened up about how the two movie worlds vary from one another, stating that the Avatar films have more room to take risks than their superhero counterparts.

Sam Worthington explains how Avatar franchise is different from MCU

The Clash of the Titans star recently admitted that the Avatar movies have to face much less pressure from external sources than Marvel does during production.

“We’re unlike Marvel movies, in the sense of…it feels like an independent movie when we make it,” Sam Worthington remarked while speaking with The Independent. “We don’t have outside pressures, or expectations from the press, or the studio, or the community. It doesn’t affect what we do. And that’s why we can take more risks.”

The 49-year-old actor further added, “It’s not like we have to get scenes completed by today or the studio is going to be upset. We just play and create. People don’t understand that. They think it’s this big, solid machine where Jim is the didactic director. And he’s not. He’s a painter.”

Despite the difference in their formulation and perception, both the Avatar and Marvel franchises have established themselves as the two biggest juggernauts of modern cinema. To this day, no movie has been able to beat the global box office output of the original Avatar movie, which grossed upwards of $2.9 billion.

MCU’s Avengers: Endgame came close to beating the record in 2019, but had to settle for second place with lifetime earnings of close to $2.8 billion, as per Box Office Mojo.

The three Avatar movies have so far collected a combined $6.7 billion at the box office. Meanwhile, a total of 11 MCU movies have managed to break the $1 billion barrier in worldwide collections so far, with 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine being the latest entry on the list.
