The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Gets Worse RT Score Than First Chris Pratt Film

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reviews are here, and the early critical response suggests a weaker reception compared to its predecessor. The animated sequel, featuring returning voice stars like Chris Pratt and Jack Black, has debuted with a lower Rotten Tomatoes score than 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

What critics are saying about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in reviews

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the sequel expands the Mario universe into space, following Mario, Luigi, and their allies as they attempt to rescue Princess Rosalina from Bowser Jr. While the premise promises a larger-scale adventure, critics have largely focused on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s storytelling and structure in their reviews.

Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times wrote, “There’s a flat empty nothingness to ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ even more than its flat empty predecessor, and that’s a huge bummer.” Similarly, Owen Gleiberman of Variety noted, “Not a single one of these characters, including Mario and Luigi, occupies the center of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’ And that’s because the movie has no center.”

Other critics echoed concerns about the film’s visual and narrative depth. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said, “Of course it’s intended for little kids, but it surely didn’t need to be such a visually dull screensaver of a movie, with even more of the cheesy, Euro-knockoff look of that first film.” Meanwhile, William Bibbiani of TheWrap described it as “so lacking in substance and purpose that after a while you can’t even hear the dialogue over the incessant sound of Aristotle’s ghost punching himself.”

However, not all responses were negative. Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon.com mentioned the film’s entertainment value. “Bigger, brighter, and far more ambitious in scope, this sequel trades the familiar terrain of the Mushroom Kingdom for a sprawling adventure that prioritizes spectacle, fan service, and pure entertainment over narrative depth, but still manages to deliver an undeniably fun ride.”

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie draws poor score on Rotten Tomatoes

As of now, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 45% on the Tomatometer. It is a noticeable drop from The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which got a 59% critic score. Audience reactions for the sequel have not yet been recorded on the Popcornmeter. In contrast, the first Chris Pratt film saw a strong 95% audience score.

Despite its star-studded voice cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Keegan-Michael Key, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s early reviews suggest that critical reception may once again differ from audience response once wider viewership begins.
