The Mummy 4 To Have a Family Reunion After All as Major Star Joins Cast
Universal Pictures is reassembling the core family for The Mummy 4. After the thrilling announcement that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would return, the studio has now confirmed that another beloved original cast member is coming aboard.
John Hannah to reprise his role as Jonathan in The Mummy 4
John Hannah will return as Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy 4, reuniting with Fraser and Weisz for the first time since the 2000s, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hannah appeared in all three previous installments, playing the charmingly unscrupulous brother of Weisz’s Evelyn Carnahan. The new film, which skips 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, is now a direct sequel to 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns.
In the original movies, Jonathan was seen as the brother of Weisz’s character, Evelyn. A thief with more charm than courage, he set the first film’s plot in motion by stealing a map from adventurer Rick O’Connell, played by Fraser. Across the trilogy, Jonathan consistently found himself swept into supernatural adventures while managing to come out ahead despite the chaos.
The film collective Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the movie. The script is by David Coggeshall. The directing duo previously directed Ready or Not movies.
The Mummy 4 is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028, with production reportedly set to begin this fall in London and Morocco. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, though fans will get a taste of the franchise’s return sooner. Universal has re-released The Mummy Returns in theaters on March 27 to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
Sean Daniel, who produced the original films along with the late James Jacks, returns as producer. Joined by Radio Silence collaborators William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein via their Project X Entertainment banner.
