Hit Netflix Live-Action Manga Adaptation Gets Sequel Release Date Window
Netflix is officially moving forward with City Hunter 2, a sequel to its 2024 Japanese live-action adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s classic manga. The streamer has set a global release window for the follow-up, with principal photography already underway.
City Hunter 2 release date window revealed
The original City Hunter film proved to be a big success for Netflix Japan upon its release in 2024. It debuted at No. 1 on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list for non-English films and appeared in the top 10 across 32 countries, including Japan, France, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Brazil. Netflix also reported that the film’s release drove a measurable increase in sales of the original manga, which has sold more than 50 million copies since its debut in 1985.
And now a sequel to it, City Hunter 2, is reportedly set to be released in 2027. Ryohei Suzuki returns as Ryo Saeba. The sharp-shooting private “sweeper” whose distinctive blend of deadpan humor, combat skill, and obsessive pursuit of beautiful women has defined the character across manga, anime, and multiple adaptations over the past four decades.
Misato Morita reprises her role as Kaori Makimura, Ryo’s partner and moral counterweight. While Fumino Kimura returns as detective Saeko Nogami. Keiichiro Shiraki, who directed the first film, is back behind the camera, working from a script by Junpei Yamaoka.
“It’s thanks to everyone who loved and supported the previous film that we are able to bring you this new installment. I’m truly grateful,” Suzuki said in a statement. “Once again, we are entrusted with Tsukasa Hojo’s beloved original work, as well as the story cherished by fans around the world.”
He continued, “With that responsibility in mind, I am approaching the filming with a strong sense of tension and determination. The previous film depicted the origin story between Ryo and Kaori. In this sequel, we’re delivering what you might call the most quintessential version of City Hunter yet.”
Hojo, the original manga creator, expressed relief at finally being able to share news of the sequel publicly. He recently visited the production set and came away impressed by the team’s commitment (via The Hollywood Reporter).
