Jason Biggs Details How American Pie Dodged NC-17 Rating Despite NSFW Scene

Jason Biggs is revisiting one of comedy’s most outrageous moments and revealing how American Pie narrowly avoided a stricter rating, thanks to a surprisingly precise on-set adjustment that changed everything.

American Pie star Jason Biggs explains how the movie avoided NC-17 rating

Speaking on the Pod Meets World podcast, Biggs shared that the team never planned an unrated version while filming the 1999 hit. “We had no idea there was gonna be an unrated version,” he said, explaining that DVDs, which later popularized alternate cuts, weren’t even part of the initial thinking. Instead, the plan was to make the scene as funny as possible.

The infamous pie scene, where his character Jim experiments with a freshly baked dessert, went through multiple versions. Biggs revealed that early cuts, including one where he climbed onto the counter, immediately triggered an NC-17 rating. Even a toned-down version didn’t pass. “That also got an NC-17,” he said, showing how strict the standards were.

What finally worked came down to a very specific detail. “The way we got it down finally to an R rating was the number of thrusts,” Biggs explained. According to him, “Two thrusts is an R, but three thrusts is an NC-17.” That small tweak helped the film remain accessible to a wider audience while retaining its comedic edge.

Despite the now-iconic result, Biggs admitted he had doubts before filming. He recalled wondering, “Is this pornography? … Am I gonna make a complete [fool of] myself?” But those fears faded quickly once the cameras rolled. After the first take, the crew burst out laughing, a moment he says confirmed they were onto something special.

The gamble paid off. Made on a $10 million budget, American Pie went on to earn over $235 million worldwide and became a defining comedy of its era. For Biggs, that risky scene didn’t just work but also helped launch a franchise and cement a pop culture legacy.
