Marvel’s Wild New Avengers Plan Almost Made Doomsday Cast Smaller
One of the stars of Thunderbolts* has revealed a key difference between the original draft of the movie and the final version. At a fan event, Wyatt Russell, who plays John Walker in the team-up movie, said the storyline unfolded in a manner that would have led to a much smaller Avengers: Doomsday cast.
Wyatt Russell says all Thunderbolts members were supposed to die
Speaking at MegaCon Orlando, Wyatt Russell said that Thunderbolts* would have originally ended with all members of the eponymous team dying. Had this happened, the Avengers: Doomsday cast would have been significantly smaller.
Notably, in the final film, only one character dies, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, killed by Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr (Ghost). However, this happens before the team’s formation.
The Thunderbolts or New Avengers are poised to have significant roles in Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters on December 18, 2026. David Harbour teased in an interview with ET Online that fans can expect some intriguing character dynamics between some of the members in the movie. He said that his character, Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian), would have “a lot of beautiful stuff” with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. The Stranger Things star also teased a brotherhood between Shostakov, Russell’s John Walker, and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).
Anthony and Joe Russo directed the movie from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely’s script. They also co-produced it with Marvel Studios via AGBO.
Rumors floating around the internet suggest that Yelena and Sentry (Lewis Pullman) will be part of some big moments in the film. The former will reportedly fight Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique from the X-Men film series. On the other hand, the latter will supposedly stop an incursion with his bare hands.
Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* is currently streaming on Disney+. Jake Schreier directed it from Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo’s script. In addition, Pearson wrote the film’s story. Apart from the aforementioned actors, the film features Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Chris Bauer as Holt, and Wendell Pierce as Gary.
