Brad Pitt’s $540M Horror Actioner Is a Major Hit on Free Streaming

More than a decade after its theatrical run, a Brad Pitt-led action horror film is finding a fresh wave of success on free streaming. The 2013 movie is now among the most-watched on Pluto TV.

World War Z is a huge hit on Pluto TV

World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, is seeing renewed popularity on Pluto TV. It has entered the platform’s Top 10 in the United States. As of March 22, 2026, the film is ranked at number six, according to FlixPatrol. It has outperformed several well-known movies, including Mean Girls, Scream, Scream 2, and Titanic. 

The film was first released in theaters on June 21, 2013. It was directed by Marc Forster and adapted from the novel by Max Brooks. Upon its release, it went on to become a major box office success, grossing over $540 million worldwide. This includes approximately $202 million from domestic markets and around $338 million internationally, according to Box Office Mojo. 

The story follows Gerry Lane, played by Pitt. He is a former United Nations investigator who is pulled back into service when a fast-spreading global outbreak begins to devastate populations. The infection turns people into aggressive, fast-moving zombies, leading to widespread chaos and the collapse of major cities. 

Lane is tasked with assisting a scientific mission. He then travels across multiple countries to trace the origin of the outbreak and help find a way to contain it. As the crisis intensifies, his journey becomes a race against time to prevent the complete breakdown of human civilization.

Alongside Brad Pitt, the film features a supporting cast that includes Mireille Enos as Karin Lane, Daniella Kertesz as Segen, James Badge Dale as Captain Speke, and Fana Mokoena as Thierry Umutoni, among others. In terms of reception, World War Z holds a 67% critics’ score and a 72% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
