Robert Kirkman reveals status of Invincible live-action movie
Robert Kirkman has provided an update on the live-action Invincible movie in an interview with ScreenRant, indicating that development is ongoing but still in early stages.
He stated he is not in “a place where [he] can’t really talk about it,” while confirming that the project continues behind the scenes. Kirkman added, “it’s definitely a long process and it’s something that hopefully will come together sooner rather than later.”
He emphasized that current priorities remain with the animated series, noting, “our focus right now is on the show and making sure that the show is all it can be.” Despite limited public updates, he confirmed: “There’s certainly movement here and there behind the scenes, but nothing that we can reveal just yet.” Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures announced the film in 2017, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg set to write, direct, and produce.
Kirkman reiterated that the team is carefully developing the adaptation to ensure it stands apart from the animated version. He explained that creating a film that “provides a different experience” requires time and deliberate planning. No official casting has been announced, although Sandra Oh has said she is “game” to portray Debbie Grayson in live-action.
The project presents challenges due to the source material’s scale, violence, and emotional depth. The series has been described as “a thrilling examination of violence and grief.” Filmmakers would need to translate these elements effectively into live action. Films like Deadpool and Logan demonstrated the commercial and narrative viability of mature superhero storytelling.
Rogen and Goldberg have experience producing The Boys and Preacher. This background positions them to handle similar tonal demands. Kirkman has also indicated long-term plans for the animated series. He suggested it could span eight to ten seasons. The film remains in development without a confirmed release timeline.
