Ryan Gosling’s Latest Sci-Fi Project Needs No Hail Mary at Box Office

Ryan Gosling’s latest sci-fi release has drawn strong attention following its opening weekend, with early box office numbers highlighting a significant global debut. The film’s performance has quickly positioned it among the most notable theatrical launches of the year.

Project Hail Mary tops weekend box office with massive opening

According to Box Office Mojo and Deadline, Project Hail Mary opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office with $80.6 million across 4,007 theaters. The Amazon MGM Studios release debuted on March 20, 2026, with daily grosses of $33.1 million on Friday, $27.1 million on Saturday, and $20.3 million on Sunday.

Worldwide, the film launched to $140.9 million, including $60.4 million from international markets across 82 territories. It marked the biggest global debut of 2026 for an MPA title, surpassing the $97 million-plus launch of Scream 7.

The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film recorded the best domestic opening for Amazon MGM Studios. It also delivered the strongest March debut for a non-franchise movie. It ranks among the top openings for original films in the post-COVID era.

Internationally, the movie opened at No. 1 in more than 60 markets, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Japan. It earned $10.2 million in the UK and $5 million in Australia. China delivered $7.1 million for a No. 2 debut.

Imax contributed $30.3 million globally, including $16.4 million in North America. This marked the biggest non-franchise Imax opening weekend for an MGM title. The format accounted for major shares in several markets, including 34% of China’s opening.

In North America, the film sold approximately 5 million tickets. Audiences paid an average of $15.53 for general admission and $18.89 for premium formats. Moviegoers concentrated attendance between 1PM–5PM and 5PM–8PM showtimes.

“We believe deeply in the Hail Mary, and it’s clear audiences do as well,” said Amazon MGM Studios’ Kevin Wilson.

He added, “What we’re seeing in theaters—the energy, the exit scores, the word of mouth—is everything we believed this film would deliver.” The film adapts Andy Weir’s novel, runs 2 hours 36 minutes, carries a PG-13 rating, and opened in 4,007 locations domestically.
