GOT Star Cast in 90s Set Action Thriller Prequel, Chow Yun-fat Returns

Aidan Gillen has been cast alongside Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat in the Cold War prequel, Cold War 3. The police procedural movie is officially titled Cold War 1994 by Edko Films. The first Cold War movie was released in 2012, whereas Cold War 2 came out in July 2016.

The Game of Thrones actor is joining the cast of the Cold War prequel Cold War 1994, alongside returning actor Chow Yun-fat.

According to Deadline, the announcement of Cold War 1994, or Cold War 3, was made by Edko Films at FilMart in Hong Kong. Apart from Gillen and Yun-fat, the other actors joining the cast are Tony Leung Ka Fai, Aaron Kwok, Louis Koo, Daniel Wu, Fish Liew, and Wu Kang Ren. Additionally, Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville has joined the line-up for the prequel.

Previously, Terrance Lau, Tse Kwan Ho, and Louise Wong were also announced as a part of the cast. Furthermore, Longman Leung is set to occupy the director’s chair for the prequel. Edko Films also revealed that Cold War 3 marks the biggest ensemble cast in the history of Hong Kong cinema.

Executive producer Bill Kong shared, “While sequels move the story forward, this prequel goes deeper. We are returning to the very source of the ‘Cold War’ universe, revealing how the power reshuffle in 1994 planted the seeds for everything that followed.”

However, the makers have not announced a release date for the prequel yet. It is currently in post-production, along with another one, titled Cold War 1995.

Notably, the Cold War movie series is one of the highest-earning thriller franchises in Hong Kong. The first part, which came out in 2012, had a limited release in the United States. Per Box Office Mojo, its global collection went on to be $8.8 million. On the other hand, the worldwide collections of Cold War 2 were around $103 million.
