Kill Bill’s Uma Thurman Reveals What She Really Thinks About Movie Violence
Uma Thurman may be forever linked to Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, but her real feelings about violence are a bit different. After years in action-heavy roles, she is now returning with action projects like The Old Guard 2. The actress has shared her honest opinion about action on screen.
Uma Thurman clears the air on what she thinks about violence
Uma Thurman said she does not really like violence, even though she became famous for films like Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2. Speaking on InStyle Magazine, she explained, “I actually don’t particularly like violence. Some people really like it; I don’t like it.”
Still, she said she can enjoy it when it feels artistic. “When I see artful movement, I can enjoy violence and action because I’m blown away by it the way I would be if I saw an extraordinary dance performance.”
For Thurman, it’s not about the violence. It’s about the artistry behind it, the movement, choreography, and craft. This mindset shaped her career choices. After Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2, she stepped away from action films for nearly two decades. One of the projects that brought her back is Pretty Lethal, a stylized thriller that mixes ballet and horror. In 2025, the actress also returned to the genre with The Old Guard 2, where she stars alongside Charlize Theron.
Thurman even created her own checklist before taking action roles again, asking if the violence was “motivated,” “beautiful,” and “genuinely executed.” If it didn’t meet that standard? She passed. Now, she’s slowly returning to action with her latest release being an example.
Pretty Lethal is a stylish thriller that mixes ballet and horror. It stars Thurman, Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, and Iris Apatow. The story follows a group of ballerinas on their way to a dance competition. Their bus breaks down, leaving them stranded at a remote inn. The old motel soon turns into a house of horrors.
She even described it as something unusual. “I looked at it, and I was like – How are they going to market this? It’s girly, and then it’s wild. It’s gruesome, funny, and powerful. It’s so over the top, it’s above the top.”
Thurman liked the project right away and said working with younger actors truly moved her. “They’re fantastically talented women, all of whom were putting it all out there with so much commitment and passion.”
Even after years away, Thurman’s return shows she still values strong storytelling and meaningful roles over just action.
