Project Hail Mary Gets Stellar Box Office Predictions Before Launch
The opening weekend for Project Hail Mary is looking brighter than ever at the box office. The sci-fi adventure film, headed by Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has already received strong projections heading into March. We reported earlier predictions that have the Amazon MGM Studios movie earning somewhere between $50 million and $65 million. Some of this is due to the film’s built-in audience, particularly from fans of the 2021 novel of the same name written by Andy Weir, the same author behind The Martian (2015). But favorable reactions to early screenings of the film, along with a slew of high scores from critics, have pushed its box office projections even further than expected right before its March 20 theatrical release.
One last box office boost for Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary
The latest box office projections have Project Hail Mary earning $70.6 million (in a range between $60 million to $78 million) in its domestic opening weekend.
These numbers are based on a March 18 report from BoxOfficeTheory and are surprisingly not the highest predictions from experts. Another report from BoxOffice Pro, which tends to use more traditional tracking for films, forecasts the movie getting somewhere between $70 million and $78 million in its opener.
These new projections are about a 15% increase on those made just a week earlier, showing how strong the word-of-mouth reviews have been for the movie and how much cinephiles have wanted to see a blockbuster, especially in premium screens like IMAX, in what has been a relatively light theatrical calendar thus far in 2026. As of March 19, Project Hail Mary holds an incredibly high 95% from critics and an even higher 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has been compared to Dune: Part Two for having a similar release strategy and appealing to audiences who are fans of the original book source or want to see movies on the best screens possible.
Domestic previews for Project Hail Mary, especially early screenings for the movie on March 16 by way of Amazon Prime membership, are expected to bring in over $10 million. Sales for the film during the weekend look strong as well, in part because of its viewer-friendly PG-13 rating and 2.5-hour runtime that make it easier for families and friends to see the movie together.
Analysts additionally point to Ryan Gosling, who plays the humble science teacher Ryland Grace, as a draw for the movie. Project Hail Mary is also headed by Lord and Miller, two fan-favorite directors who have steered The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street franchises in the right direction. While Gosling has most recently had success as part of a cast, specifically Ken in the Barbie movie, he has struggled when it comes to solo projects, such as The Fall Guy, Gangster Squad, and Blade Runner 2049, which all didn’t perform as well at the box office than anticipated. So Project Hail Mary already looks like it will turn things around for him.
Better yet, Project Hail Mary doesn’t have much competition over the weekend and for several weeks after that. Its biggest rivals during the weekend are new releases Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which have a forecast of about $9 million for their openers. Hoppers, Reminders of Him, and Scream 7, which have been in theaters for longer than a week, are expected to pull only a few amount of viewers away. The movie will not face fierce competition until April 1, the release date for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is projected to rake in more than $147 million over its 5-day weekend.
Over its entire domestic run, Project Hail Mary is projected to pull in over $200 million, which would be comparable to the similar $228 million haul for The Martian. It’s estimated that the movie will need to reach the $500 million mark at the global box office for it to break even.
