The Batman 2: Robert De Niro Was Offered Big Role in DC Movie Sequel

Robert De Niro could have joined the cast of The Batman 2; however, the Goodfellas star apparently turned down an offer to star in the film.

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios’ The Batman 2, also known as The Batman: Part II, is scheduled to be released in United States theaters next year. A sequel to 2022’s The Batman, the movie, which is part of The Batman Epic Crime Saga, is once again being directed by Matt Reeves. It will see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

What is the update on The Batman 2 and Robert De Niro?

With production on The Batman 2 beginning later this year, some casting announcements regarding the new DC movie have been made. It is known, for example, that Sebastian Stan is playing Harvey Dent in the film, while Scarlett Johansson has also been cast.

One role the film seems to have a hard time filling, however, is that of Harvey’s father, Christopher Dent. There have been some reports that Warner Bros. was considering some high-profile, A-list actors like Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgård, and Brad Pitt for the role; however, they all allegedly passed, and the part still needs to be cast.

On Twitter, Jeff Sneider of The InSneider quipped that De Niro could be a fun casting choice for Christopher Dent. Sneider wrote, “I haven’t heard anyone mention him, possibly b/c he’s older than other candidates, but if we’re talking about who could realistically have a 43-year-old son & thrive in a CRIME movie?”

The following day, Sneider then shared, “Serious post: Shortly after I published this tweet, someone reached out to say that De Niro was, in fact, offered the role… and passed. Drats!”

De Niro, who starred in the 2019 Joker DC movie as Murray Franklin, has won Academy Awards for his performances in The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull, while he’s also been nominated for Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Awakenings, Cape Fear, Silver Linings Playbook, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He’ll soon be seen reprising his role as Jack Byrnes in Focker In-Law, which releases this November.

The Batman 2 currently has an October 1, 2027, release date.
