A coming-of-age drama from Paul Thomas Anderson, featuring Sean Penn, is set to be removed from Netflix. The film’s exit from the platform marks the end of its current streaming window.
Licorice Pizza leaves Netflix in April
Licorice Pizza, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is set to be removed from Netflix on April 16, 2026. The film, which has been part of the streamer’s catalog for quite some time now, will no longer be accessible after that date.
Originally released in select U.S. theaters on November 26, 2021, the film is set in 1973 and unfolds in California’s San Fernando Valley. Set in 1973 in the San Fernando Valley, the film follows 15-year-old child actor Gary Valentine and 25-year-old photographer’s assistant Alana Kane. The two first meet during a high school photo session, where Gary confidently approaches Alana and asks her out.
Although initially hesitant due to their age difference and circumstances, Alana eventually agrees to spend time with Gary. Their lives then become closely intertwined, with the pair navigating a series of experiences together. These include attempts at various business ventures and their search for direction.
The film features Cooper Hoffman in the role of Gary Valentine and Alana Haim as Alana Kane. The supporting cast includes Sean Penn as Jack Holden, Tom Waits as Rex Blau, and Bradley Cooper as Jon Peters.
Following its release, Licorice Pizza received strong recognition from critics. It currently holds a 90% critics’ score and a 65% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Loud and Clear Reviews reported, “Perhaps more than anything, Licorice Pizza is a film rich in detail. Every aspect of it has warmth behind it, a thoughtful, slice-of-life freshness which very few directors and screenwriters (Anderson does both, as usual) can give their films.”
