Oscar-Winner Michael B. Jordan Addresses Miami Vice Reboot Casting Reports

Michael B. Jordan finally spoke out about the rumors linking him to Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice reboot. At a pre-Oscars event, the actor played it coy when asked whether he’d be slipping into the iconic role of Detective Rico Tubbs, offering a response that has fans reading between the lines.

Michael B. Jordan plays coy about Miami Vice reboot casting reports

When approached by Variety on the Oscars red carpet, Michael B. Jordan couldn’t hide his smile at the mention of Miami Vice. “I mean, who doesn’t want to be in Miami? Miami’s nice…It’s a great project,” the actor said, carefully sidestepping any confirmation while acknowledging the reboot’s appeal.

The timing of Jordan’s comments is crucial as they come amid shifting reports about the film’s casting. While Glen Powell was initially rumored to be in talks for the role of Sonny Crockett last September, recent updates indicate that Austin Butler has now come up as the frontrunner for that part. Butler reportedly went directly to Jordan to pitch himself as the “perfect” Sonny to Jordan’s Rico Tubbs, with Jordan subsequently pushing for Butler’s casting to studio executives.

For Michael B. Jordan, taking on Rico Tubbs would mean stepping into a role previously played by Philip Michael Thomas in the groundbreaking 1980s series. Then later by Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation. The original series, which ran from 1984 to 1989 on NBC, transformed its leads into cultural icons and launched the careers of future stars like Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, and Ben Stiller through guest appearances.

Now, the Miami Vice reboot has generated big buzz since its announcement, particularly with Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski attached to direct. Kosinski will work from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, said to be based on Eric Warren Singer’s earlier draft. Dylan Clark joins Kosinski in producing the project.

Production on the Miami Vice reboot is expected to start this year, with Universal scheduling an August 2027 release date.
