Netflix To Bring Beloved $900 Million Musical Biopic Ahead of Michael

Netflix is adding a major music biopic to its library soon. The hit film about a legendary singer and his legendary band is set to arrive on the platform next month, just as anticipation grows for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael.

Bohemian Rhapsody gets Netflix release date

The award-winning musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody will begin streaming on Netflix on April 1, giving viewers another chance to revisit the story of Queen’s rise to global fame (via What’s on Netflix). The film focuses on Freddie Mercury’s journey from an outsider musician to one of rock’s most recognizable voices. It follows the band’s formation, their rapid climb in the music world, and Mercury’s personal struggles.

Released in 2018, the movie was directed by Bryan Singer. The film stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, alongside Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, and Joseph Mazzello, who portray the other members of Queen. Malek’s performance earned widespread praise and eventually won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The movie was backed by 20th Century Fox and was made on a reported budget of $52 million.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences strongly supported the film. Bohemian Rhapsody went on to earn more than $900 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful music biopics ever released (via Box Office Mojo). The film holds a 7.9 rating on IMDb, while review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lists a moderate critics’ score of 60% but a much higher audience rating.

The movie’s Netflix arrival also comes as another major music biopic prepares for theaters. The upcoming film Michael will explore the life of pop icon Michael Jackson and his transformation into the “King of Pop.” Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the project stars Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, with a cast that includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Miles Teller. The film will chart Jackson’s early career, global fame, and the music that reshaped pop culture completely.
