Fans of Michael Jackson will have a chance to see his upcoming biopic slightly earlier than expected. Lionsgate has revealed plans for select early screenings of Michael before the film reaches theaters for its wide release.

Michael sets early screening date ahead of release

Lionsgate announced limited early access screenings for the Michael Jackson biopic Michael before its wide theatrical release. The film will play in IMAX and premium large formats on Wednesday, April 22, two days before its nationwide opening on April 24. Tickets for the one-night screenings go on sale at 6 a.m. PT and 9 a.m. ET on March 11.

Antoine Fuqua directs the film, and Michael Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson plays the title role. The official description says the movie follows Jackson’s life “beyond the music.” It traces his journey from discovering his talent as the young lead singer of the Jackson 5 to becoming a visionary performer pursuing global success.

The film explores Michael Jackson’s life beyond the stage. It charts his development as an “artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.” It also highlights moments from his life offstage and iconic performances from his early solo career.

Jaafar Jackson portrays the singer and recreates several of Michael Jackson’s performances and signature movements in the trailer released by Lionsgate. The cast also includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Miles Teller as John Branca. Nia Long plays Katherine Jackson, Kendrick Sampson portrays Quincy Jones, and Larenz Tate plays Motown founder Berry Gordy.

Lionsgate’s Kevin Grayson said the early screenings aim to present the performances and music in large-format cinemas. “For Michael Jackson’s fans, Michael is the cinematic event they’ve been waiting for — the movie captures both the soul and the spectacle of the boy who became the King of Pop,” he stated (via Deadline).
