Margot Robbie American Psycho Rumor Debunked as Reimagining Gets New Details
The rumor that Margot Robbie was in line to star in the new American Psycho movie has been debunked.
What is the major update regarding the Margot Robbie rumor about American Psycho?
Over the weekend, The Sun reported that Robbie has been in “advanced discussions” to star in American Psycho, a reimagining of the Bret Easton Ellis novel by director Luca Guadagnino.
“A remake of American Psycho is in the works, and Margot is in the frame to play a female version of Patrick Bateman,” the Sun’s source said. “Brett’s novel and the film were so controversial, and the people working on the remake wanted to twist the narrative by having a female actress take on the lead of Bateman.”
In response to the Robbie rumor, Deadline has reported that the new American Psycho will not be a gender-swapped version. Patrick Bateman will be played by a man, not by Robbie.
In October 2024, Guadagnino boarded the reimagining of American Psycho at Lionsgate. Guadagnino will direct from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (The Report). The movie is a new adaptation of the novel and not a remake of the 2000 film.
Austin Butler had been attached to star as Patrick Bateman. Jacob Elordi and Patrick Schwarzenegger had also been rumored to play Bateman. In January 2025, Ellis claimed Butler’s casting was “fake news.”
The new American Psycho is still in development at Lionsgate. Edward R. Pressman, who produced the original movie, will executive produce. Frenesy Films is attached as the producer.
The first feature film adaptation of American Psycho was released in April 2000. Christian Bale played Patrick Bateman, a New York City investment banker who turned into a serial killer at night. Directed by Mary Harron, American Psycho became a polarizing project due to its controversial subject matter. The film grossed over $34 million worldwide on a $7 million budget.
